Oostenburg is one of Amsterdam’s three Oostelijke Eilanden – literally Eastern Islands. It’s located between the island of Wittenburg and the neighbourhood known as the Czaar Peterbuurt. The island’s name is an indication of its geography as it lies to the east of the other two islands of Kattenburg and Wittenburg.

The island was created in the 17th century by the VOC, the Dutch East India Company, for its shipyards and warehouses. At one stage Oostenburg was entirely dominated by the VOC’s yards. These activities confirmed Amsterdam’s stature as an international trading metropolis. In 1697 Peter the Great himself spent four months studying shipbuilding at the VOC shipyards in Oostenburg. C-Roots has recently moved premises to Werxpoor, the old head offices of the machine manufacturer 'Verenigde Machinefabrieken Stork-Werkspoor’.

Nowadays, the island of Oostenburg is an inspiring and exciting place to be. An up-and-coming part of the city. The former site of Werkspoor is also home to the Theater Fabriek Amsterdam, a performing arts theatre, the complex of railways halls known as de Hallen van Stork, the creative urban oasis of Roest, and INIT, where you can find the editorial offices the Dutch newspapers Het Parool, Trouw and De Volkskrant. And there’s the popular Czaar Peter Street just around the corner. But whatever the island has to offer, C-Roots’ strategy, concepts and designs are of course the main reason to drop by…that and a good chat over a great cup of coffee
